The Real Housewives of New Jersey couple Jaqueline and Chris Laurita are speaking out about their son Nicholas’ autism diagnosis. The parents said they picked up on signs of Nicolas’ (now three years old) autism when he was about 18 months. He would do things like not answer to his name, or notice others. “We had no idea what was going on,” Jacqueline said. “The most telling factor is when he wouldn’t tell me ‘I love you.'”
When they first received the diagnosis Chris said they didn’t want to believe it was true. “You never want to think that your child isn’t perfectly healthy,” he said. Jacqueline is encouraged and feels blessed that her family has the resources to handle the situation. “Everything is so expensive and time consuming,” she says. “We’re lucky we can devote ourselves to this … I don’t know how most people do it.” She also says she has seen slight changes in Nicholas’ temperament. “He’s been surprising us with little words here and there: everything he says is a celebration,” Jacqueline says. “I worry about him being independent when he’s older. I spend all my time researching what we can do for him.”
Jacqueline said she kept any of this from airing on Bravo while shooting season 4, but would be open to sharing their journey on season 5. “If I could help one person by showing this,” she told People Magazine, “it would be worth it.”
We wish the Laurita family much luck.
