Backlash From NeNe Leakes’ Ebony Cover!

Ebony Magazine is receiving A LOT of criticism for having Real Housewife of Atlanta Star NeNe Leakes on their cover. NeNe was featured in Ebony’s Power & Esteemed Respect Issue. So what are people saying? “Ebony magazine has lost any credibility that it once had,” one commenter said, while another simply asked, “Ebony couldn’t get ANYONE else on the cover???” One comment even called the Housewives Star a “Donkey With Diamonds.”

Those are just comments online. On her nationally syndicated talk show, Wendy Williams, who also appears in the issue, spoke out against the criticism of Ebony and NeNe, referring to it as “crabs in a barrel.”

NeNe is defending herself, “I absolutely deserve to be on the cover,” she tells The Daily Beast. “This cover is about money, power, and respect. And it’s about a come-up story and I’m the one that had that story this year … Not only did I come out as a reality star that was very boisterous and vivacious and outspoken and all those things. I flipped that into money and respect. And a lot of people can’t do that. But listen to me, definitely all of the negative feedback definitely came from my own; African Americans were the ones that were the most negative,” she continues, adding, “And it’s so funny to me because I would call [the editor] over at Ebony and she would say ‘Girl please, glass houses. That’s all it is. They don’t want to see you on the cover, they don’t really understand the reason why you’re on the cover, they don’t know your story.’”

The editor in chief of Ebony is even speaking out, “Those who take issue with reality television’s role in pop culture have questioned whether Ebony made the right decision by glorifying one of its most popular characters,” said Amy Dubois Barnett.

NeNe added, “When Housewives of Atlanta first came out, there were no Basketball Wives, there was no Hip Hop Wives, no Hollywood Exes, none of that stuff. When Real Housewives of Atlanta came out, we were the first African-American ensemble like that on reality television. And right after that, there’s every housewife you can think of: basketball, football, baseball, ex-wives, any and everything. Trust and believe, I’ve looked at their shows and I say, ‘there goes their NeNe’ or ‘they’re trying to find their NeNe.’ I swear I feel like that every time.”

All I have to say is this:

Tell Us- Do you think NeNe deserved to be on the cover of Ebony?

My name is Nicki. I am 32 years-old and married to my best friend. I was previously in business for over 12 years, but I’ve always had a great passion for web and graphic design. Another one of my passions, of course, is to escape into the world of TV, which is where this journey began. My goal in starting AllThingsRH.com was to give fans, like myself, a place to catch up on all the latest news and gossip about The Real Housewives. I wanted to create a place where viewers could interact with each other, share their opinions, and get straight-forward and unbiased information about what’s going on. I am proud of the diversity this site has to offer.

  • I think Nene deserves the cover
Lindsey Lohan has been on many covers… Nene beat Lindsey in the ratings on Sunday #rhoA vs #Liz n Dick. Plus NeNe is paid more than Lindsey was for lifetime movie vs #rhoA

    • Love In Chains

Not too hard to out do Lindsey Lohan, I am just saying…

I do not think she is worthy of it. I am all about supporting people when they come up in the world but NeNe has taken this little bit of fame to her head. Giving her this cover has only given her room to make more false accusations of being rich. When given a good opportunity don’t ever forget where you come from. Change your horrible attitude and come back down to earth.

Interesting how she names off Basketball Wives, HipHop Wives and Hollywood Wives looking for their NeNe. Basketball Wives was nothing short of a Jerry Springer episode. I can’t remember her name but the woman that married Ocho Cinco or whatever his name was a runner up but I think the NeNe award went to Tami Roman. They all come from “The Louder I Talk Over You The More You Better Be Afraid Of Me” school. Disgraceful show.

NeNe is so wonderful she’s registered herself for wedding gifts for her re-marriage to Greg. They already have at least 2 furnished homes and she needs wedding gifts to re-marry the guy she divorced a couple of years ago? ‘Cuz she’s “rich, b!tch!”

I would be more impressed by her Celebrity Apprentice gig if she hadn’t quit and walked out. Nothing says success like a quitter.

Last time I checked, Ebony was not The Economist. It’s an entertainment magazine, designed to sell advertising by giving people what they want. Nene is a successful black entertainer. Why wouldn’t she be on the cover?

  • NeNe is currently on 3 hit tv shows…… hello 3

    and

nene survived poverty, domestic violence, stripping, single parenting
and then saved her marriage to…gregg…. they r back together

    nene was on celebrity apprentice…..

Lots of people have overcome some of the same things that NeNe has! More power to her but I guess I’m the only one that sees that she looks down on people who can’t afford to live a lavish life. Just think back to last season how she downed played Kandi’s Bedroom Kandi party by repeating over and over that this is a Twitter party. So I guess fans on Twitter are not worthy of being at the same party’s that she attends. I’m happy for her and her success but she could be a little more humble and people will not judge her in this way.

    • Love In Chains

You are not the only one. There are plenty of others, check out other little stories about NeNe and you will see. The only person that really deserves any kind of accolades from RHOA is Kandi. Humble, kind and RICH.

WHY NOT! Nene is doing her thing. I love her and she has changed up her attitude but still keeps it real. Let’s learn how to celebrate one another. When we learn to be happy for anothers success, perhaps success will come our way. GO NENE!
