Seven Things You Didn’t Know About Mama Joyce Jones

Joyce

One of the most controversial women on The Real Housewives of Atlanta this season has been Kandi Burruss’ mother, Joyce Jones. Before Mama Joyce was voicing her opinion about Kandi’s relationship on national television, she had a very interesting life of her own. Thanks to BravoTV.com’s The Dish, here are 7 facts about Joyce that may surprise you.

1. Kandi is not Joyce’s only child.
Joyce’s eldest, son Patrick, tragically died in a car crash at the age of 22 (when Kandi was 15).

2. She comes from a huge family.
She’s the youngest of 14 children.

3. She’s a working girl.
Joyce has held posts as a telecommunications professional, but retired when she had to undergo spinal surgery.

4. Kandi is not her meal ticket.
“Anybody that knows me knows that I’ve always had my own money,” she recently told Ebony. “I’ve been on disability, Social Security, and plus I have rental property.”

5. She’s an inspiring mother.
Kandi credits her mom with helping her build her career and fortunes, which is why she recently told Andy Cohen “She made sure I was good growing up; I’m going to make sure she’s good [now].”

6. She’s got a love life, too!
Just because Joyce seems extra concerned about her daughter’s romantic interests, it doesn’t mean she can’t focus on her own. Kandi recently revealed that her mom is dating a mystery man.

7. She’s a muse.
Joyce’s strong personality inspires art. Kandi’s relationship with her mom is at the center of her new musical, A Mother’s Love.

My name is Nicki. I am 32 years-old and married to my best friend. I was previously in business for over 12 years, but I’ve always had a great passion for web and graphic design. Another one of my passions, of course, is to escape into the world of TV, which is where this journey began. My goal in starting AllThingsRH.com was to give fans, like myself, a place to catch up on all the latest news and gossip about The Real Housewives. I wanted to create a place where viewers could interact with each other, share their opinions, and get straight-forward and unbiased information about what’s going on. I am proud of the diversity this site has to offer.

  • Well… it sure sounds like your average WORKING girl: “I’ve been on disability, Social Security, and plus I have rental property.”

Not meaning to diss people who are on disability or social security or those who live off by renting property, it is just very telling and very sad when that is your source of income. There’s quite a few disabled people with severe disabilities who still earn their living by working, and from where I am from, if you got a property to rent out, then you are not eligible for social security.. especially if your daughter is multimillionaire… yet there are single mothers, single individuals on streets that actually are entitled to their social security support….

It is legal to receive SSDI and have income property. Once you begin working you pay into SSI. It is also legal to work part time and receive benefits. There are certain criteria used to be considered disabled by the government. So when you see people with disabilities working they are probably also receiving benefits as they should.

      you. are a.dumb ass!

Number 4 actually made me laugh and shake my head. Only Joyce would cite, “Disability, Social Security, and….. rental property” as evidence she takes care of herself financially. The first two aren’t careers, the rental property was probably originally paid for by Candi. We know at the very least she guilted Candi into giving her a far more expensive house recently because her daughter was moving up. No man could possibly ever use Candi (as her mom claims) as much as Joyce does while simultaneously making Candi unhappy and feeling guilty and responsible.

Joyce is an embarrassment on the show. She should be taken off or kandi should stand up to her – one or the other.

I agree..mama Joyce needs to mind her own business..she is not an asset to the show..she has insulted everyone who befriends her daughter. Did she have a perfect life? Tod is her son in law..his mother doesn’t need mama joyces lies and insults..Kandi needs to get some balls with dealing with her mother..she can still love her but for hevin’s sakes quit being so passive when your mom goes on a rediculous tirrade

  • charrison

The only money hungry person is that pitiful mother. … I thought she was a pastor? She’s to nasty to speak as a pastor. Hypocrite

  • disgusted

This woman is a disgrace. Take her off the show. Todd is a saint to put up with her disrespect.
Kandi needs a backbone…she should defend her husband and cut her mother off the gravy train.

“Anonymous” You missed the point entirely, which doesn’t really surprise me. It’s about CHARACTER, not what one can get away with legally. You see, some people expect more from themselves than staying out of jail or sucking the life out of everyone else. The point is Joyce bragged about she had her “own money” and eluded to having a bunch of it, but the only thing she’s ever done herself to earn it would have only given her enough to survive, not thrive. The “diamonds” and “paparazini” (what the H is that?!?!) she brags about were from other people’s efforts or losses. Kandi gave her the property. She’s no more disabled than I am, and I’m 65 years old and WORK. And it’s reputed part of it was from a life insurance policy her poor son had to die for her to have. Again, not illegal – but rally unsavory.

I agree. I simply responded to your previous message. Mama Joyce is very dis respectful and a terrible example of a mother and mother-in-law. But who are we to question her disabilities. Kandi can do whatever she wants for her mother; however, she needs to demand respect for Todd. Kandi also rude to Todd’s Mom on an upcoming episode. I agree some people don’t have great character and are always looking for a free ride.

        • DebBrenn

Coincidentally as I was reading your comment in the background is a rerun of Joyce telling Kandi in front of Todd’s daughter that, basically, her own daughter will be her only real daughter. She’s a HORRIBLE woman, and I’ll give her no slack for anything. And I will judge her “disability” by the fact she has tried to get into several physical altercations with various people. If she’s in fighting form, she can do SOMETHING. She gets around, she drives, I assume she can read and write, and she’s neither blind nor deaf. I would suggest she stay away from working with the public, though, as she is a public menace.

          • Truly

Have you ever heard of unseen disabilities, such as Breathing problems, Heart disease and such. Just because someone would fight doesn’t mean they physically should. Ofcourse it would probably bring harm to them. I DO BELIEVE IN STRONG CHARACTER because that is essentially who we are. To this end, I’m surprised that Kandi would continuously have her Mom filmed. She is a disgrace to any Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend.

            • Anonymous

I agree, can’t stand the hag

  • Truly

Just to be clear…No one can receive SSI, SSDI or Unemployment unless they have previously worked. If Joyce did or does receive benefits it can’t be very much. She stated that she also received money from Men, which is far worse in my opinion. I feel every able bodied person should support themselves. I am not in belief that one should rely on governmental support.

    • DebBrenn

Joyce has whined and belly ached about working at 4 o’clock in the morning when her kids were young. And she’s taken credit for her daughter’s early success. But Kandi said herself a teacher had to take her to auditions in high school, and if you’re working at 4 AM you’re not working during after school hours (which is the only time casting people can book kids for interviews.) Joyce manipulates her daughter with guilt, and I don’t think Kandi owes her crap.

I wanted to know how old is Joyce, because if she is 62 and up and was recieving social security of any kind it turns into retirement benefits. As for ssi anyone can recieve that if they are disable whether they work or not work. SSI is for people who never work or had limited income, the problem is they can not claim 50% of their income for dependents and spouse. SSDI comes from points you build up from working, you can get 50% income for your child or spouse (If your income is $1000 a month your child or spouse can recive a check for $500) Any one who recieve SSI or SSDI at the age 62 or up benefits turn into retirement benefits, you can then work, own property etc.

Ms. Joyce is not a very nice person. She is not an asset to the show and is too old to behave the way that she does. She apparently is not too smart if she thinks that her behavior is cute. IT’S NOT. She thinks that everything is about money. well IT’S NOT. and Ms. Joyce,. Kandi loves you but no one else has to tolerate your behavior.
